What it’s like to be a college instructor at a “real school” vs a “career college”….?
At a “real school” (generally regional accreditation: public universities, private universities, community colleges)…….

Instructors are treated like Gods. They have ultimate power over their class.
Sometimes their classes are 1-2 hours per day, 2 days per week.
and some are 3 or 4 hours per day, 1 day per week.
and they aren’t expected to hold class the entire time; it is common practice to dismiss early.
It is usually up to the instructors to decide what attendance policy the students have to follow.
They are paid by the CREDIT hour, not the physical hour.
Meaning; If they don’t show up one day; they get a substitute……..they still get paid for that day.
They can even choose to flat out cancel a class…….not have to make it up….and they still get paid for it.

At a career college…….generally national accreditation…….
Instructors are treated like workers, paid by the PHYSICAL hour.
the norm is: classes are held 5 hours per day, 1 day per week.
There is an expectation that instructors hold class for most of the entire time. Certainly no less than 4.5 hours.
There is also an expectation that instructors document the students’ attendance…..
(not just whether they show up, but precisely how many minutes they spend in the classroom.)
If an instructor can’t make it in and gets a substitute; he doesn’t get paid for that day.
If an instructor needs to cancel a class…….the class needs to be made up at an alternative time.

I got my degree from a “real school”……..noticed how much fun it was to be a college teacher……
so I got a teaching job at a career college……and I was surprised to learn just how different it is from the norm I’m used to.

West Side School History Lesson 2009

Abraham Lincoln, Napolean, Daniel Boone, Cleopatra, Pete Marivich, Alexander the Great, and Leonardo, were just some of the historical figures represented by the kids at West Side School today. While they learned, they taught themselves history and by teaching themselves, they taught others. The brainchild of West Side teacher Melissa Anderson, the children at West Side have been dressing as historical figures for four or five years now. The kids know that they will be dressing up as the characters in their history book and they look forward to it each year. Anderson doesn’t take the credit, though. She states it was actually a college professor’s idea and she decided that it would help children to learn. Looks like it’s working, too. To participate, a child must complete a biography and learn a short speech. They stand like statutes and when someone rings the bell, they come to life and when the speech or skit is over, they become like statutes again. They had been at it since 8:30 this morning. Unfortunately, not everyone could be featured in this documentary. Cannon County truly has some talented and intelligent children if this is any indication, and a teacher that thinks outside of the box. Children and adults alike could be seen listening intently as the ones in costume told about who they were, their life, and what happened to them. This is a case where learning was definitely fun and something that will be remembered for a lifetime.

Work Your Passion Montserrat seminars announced

BRADES, Montserrat – Author and Entrepreneur Nerissa Golden announced the start of a workshop series to empower persons to turn their passions into enterprise. Work Your Passion Montserrat is a two-part seminar for people who want to start a business but are not sure which direction to take and how to get there.

“I have learned that you can do what you love and earn an income from it. Your love for baking, fashion, photography, computers, numbers, organizing are all potential moneymakers,” said Golden. “Your passion is the thing you do and would do without thinking about being paid for it. However, that passion has value and it is the best foundation on which to build a successful business.”

The seminars will be held twice monthly with the first on Saturday, May 8 at the Grand View Bed & Breakfast in Baker Hill. They will run from 8:30am to noon and will only cater to 20 persons at a time.

“My vision is to teach the principles that have enabled me to start several successful ventures, including an alternative learning school and also how to overcome the fears that usually stop us from fulfilling our dreams of owning a business,” explained the author of The Making of a Caribbeanpreneur: Strategies for Overcoming Fear and Building Wealth. “Many times our biggest obstacle isn’t finances, it’s our own fears and this seminar tackles those issues head on. There are a lot of classes that teach about writing a business plan and marketing but before we even get to the plan we must recognize what we ultimately want to do and deal with the roadblocks that often times we put in our own way.”

Golden has been a featured speaker for the Cayman Islands Investment Bureau’s Inspiring Women Entrepreneurs Forum, the Barbados Youth Business Trust, and the Caribbean Young Entrepreneurs Symposiums (YES). She is the owner of goldenmedia Montserrat, a public and media relations firm that has been working with young entrepreneurs and the non-profit sector in the Caribbean for more than five years. Its flagship brand is trulycaribbean.net, which is a web portal that celebrates the work of Caribbean people, and provides information and resources to boost spirit, mind and body.

Each seminar cost EC$ 100 and interested persons must register in advance. Call Tel: 495-4420 to register or email: info@trulycaribbean.net.
